PHONETICS DEPARTMENT, FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY, UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB, CROATIA

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Zagreb phonetics was officially instituted at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1954, when the Institute for Phonetics was established at the initiative of professor Petar Guberina.

From the very beginning the scientific work at the Institute was experimental, reflected in the name Experimental section that was established within the section for philology at the Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1953, for the purposes of research in the field of phonetics.

Another characteristic is the interdisciplinary nature of the Phonetics Department at Zagreb. It was clear from the early fifties that modern phonetics could advance only in close cooperation with experts from other scientific fields, such as linguistics, medicine (particularly otorhinolaryngology), acoustics and physics.

Graduate study of phonetics began in 1961/62, and the first Master-of-Arts degrees in phonetics were awarded in 1964. The first dissertation in phonetics was defended and a Ph.D. awarded at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1962. In 1963 the Phonetics Chair was established within the Linguistics department.

The first undergraduate students were enrolled in 1965/66. In 1968, a Department for theoretical and applied phonetics was established with the following three chairs: for theoretical phonetics, for applied phonetics and for esthetic phonetics and orthoepy of standard Croatian. The department subsequently changed its name to the Department of Phonetics.

The entrance exam consists of two parts, written and oral. The written test contains questions on basic phonetic terms, the phonetics and grammar of the Croatian language and basic knowledge of psychology and acoustics, based upon high-school textbooks.
