Dubio Marte

Magistratus officiaque

RDCG singuli bani septem centurionibus imperabant, maior natu ex centurionibus cum bano suae ditionis gentibus ius dicebant. Duces uero ad ius populo dicendum cum quinque consiliariis praetoribus considebant, insuper magistratus officiaque diuidentes qui prouinciam regerent exigerentque uectigalia a ducibus constituta et quaeque regno plebique expedientia prouiderent.⁵⁾

⁵⁾ CC, written thirty years after RDCG, obviously made mistakes in copying. Still, comparison with GRS shows that RDCG creates a more Roman state apparatus: ditio, consiliarii praetores, magistratus officiaque, prouinciam regere, exigere uectigalia. Marulić presents a different perspective on tax collecting: not “tributa accipere” but “exigere uectigalia”. And finally, RDCG articulates the responsibilities of public officials: “quaeque regno plebique expedientia prouiderent”.
